Chapter 16

“Now that Paige and I are showered and dressed, get your game faces on. Everyone remembers where they’re going today, right?” Addie asked, grabbing her satchel from the end of the sofa.

“Yes,” said Catherine. “You and I are off to the garden club meeting.”

“And Paige and I are heading over to the book sale at the library to see if we can find those missing first editions and speak with this Patricia woman.” Felix retrieved his car keys from his blazer pocket.

“And I’m stuck here manning the phones and updating the board,” said Serena, sounding none too pleased.

“Your job is the most important,” said Addie reassuringly as she scratched Pippi behind the ear. “Plus, Pippi needs company for the day since Valerie will be at the meeting and then the library sale too.”

“Where’s Marc?” asked Serena as the group headed out the door.

“He said last night he was going to talk to Turner about allowing Paige and me to go home, but I haven’t heard anything on it today. Maybe shoot him a text and let him know you’re here and what you’re doing. I’m sure he’ll stop by. Call if you need anything,” yelled Addie, closing the door.

The warm midmorning sun mingled with the aroma of spring flowers, and the briny scent off the ocean made Addie wish the day could be spent exploring the peninsula and not figuring out who had a motive to commit murder. But then again, days like this had become commonplace for her since moving to this part of the state. It must be something in the air, she mused as she wiggled into the driver’s seat of the Wrangler and waited for Catherine to fasten her seat belt.

Addie glanced over at Catherine as she steered the SUV down the hill to Sea Spray Drive. “Have you decided what you’re going to do about the Jonathan-and-Felix situation?”

“Yes. I’m going to take your advice and be honest with them both. Felix has been the best thing that’s happened to me in a long, long time. He shows up when he says he will, I don’t have to wait weeks or months to see him, and worry that something might come up with his work to delay him again. And . . .”

“And what?”

“He’s going to start a business in Greyborne Harbor, so I know for sure he’ll be staying put.”

“That’s wonderful! What kind of business?”

“He hasn’t told anyone, but since it looks like it’s going to be a go . . . He’s been working on getting his private investigator’s license,” Catherine said, pride evident in her voice.

“Good for him. That certainly fits in with what he used to do in Navy Intelligence and as a security specialist at the Smithsonian and with Zach’s dad, Oliver.”

“Yes, but enough about me. It sounds like you’ve gotten yourself in another pickle, haven’t you?”

Addie slowed down to read the road sign and gave a quick side glance at Catherine. “What are you talking about? Being a suspect?” She read the crossroad sign, shook her head, and drove on.
